Third, some ectopic hormone syndromes develop in patients with nonendocrine neoplasms without neuroendocrine characteristics. HM is now regarded as ectopic PTHrP syndrome; the neoplasms associated with this syndrome do not always possess neuroendocrine characteristics. Each of these categories requires a different explanation from the standpoint of its pathogenesis.
